＊Campus Life The Office of Student Affairs offers services for our students covering every aspect of campus life. In other words, our services reach every aspect of our students’ life on campus, including helping our students achieve maturity independently, establishing sound development of clubs and extracurricular activities, enhancing gender education, activating life guidance, and maintaining campus safety. 1. NCUE has two campuses: the Jin-De Campus and the Bao-Shan Campus, both of which provide all sorts of facilities for advanced study. In addition, there are plenty of places for recreation, including all the large-sized lawns in the recreational areas as well as a number of scenic sections, which teachers and students are all welcome to use. 2. The Activity Center is the place for the activities and working of student clubs and organizations. There are a Student Performance Theater (with a lounge, a karaoke bar, and a stage), an auditorium, and a plaza. All students are welcome to enjoy themselves in their leisure time in this place. 3. NCUE has one gymnasium, tennis courts, track and field facilities, basketball courts, one softball field, one soccer pitch, and volleyball courts, etc. Some are in the Jin-De Campus and others are in the Bao-Shan Campus. 4. Both the Jin-De Campus and the Bao-Shan Campus have student cafeterias, which serve clean and healthy food for our teachers and students. The restaurants nearby the campuses also offer food of the Chinese or the western style. ＊Learning Chinese Language and Culture on Campus: There are presently 75 student clubs and organizations in NCUE, which can be categorized into five types: student associations, academic clubs, recreational clubs, service clubs, and athletic clubs. Foreign students can join any clubs in their free time at their own will to learn the local culture. Besides, the more and more modernized library, with its large book collection, decent atmosphere, and comfortable environment, is virtually the best place for culture learning. ＊Types of Financial Aid： More than 1,500 NCUE students receive one or more types of financial aid, totaling $3,0 million a year. Financial aid refers to the wide variety of programs that help students and their families pay for college. It’s available in three forms: • Grants and scholarships, which do not have to be repaid. • Loans, which have to be repaid. • Work-study, which provides aid in exchange for work, usually in the form of campus-based employment. 1. Scholarships: There are more than 80 scholarships sponsored by a variety of funds. Since each scholarship has different requirements, applicants are advised to consult the Extracurricular Activities Section or log on to the website of the Office of Student Affairs to ascertain that they can meet the requirements. 2. Work-study: 2.1 NCUE students can apply for the one-year work-study offered by NCUE. The students can renew their applications every year. 2.2 The fee is NT$ 90 per hour. The students have to work eight months every academic year. The maximal monthly working hours are 32 hours. 2.3 Freshmen can apply for the work-study after the school starts while those who are not freshmen should apply for the jobs before the end of the previous academic year. The application dates are promulgated by the Extracurricular Activities Section (which is one of the sections in the Office of Student Affairs).

The Chiao Tung Universities (four in China and one in Taiwan) were initially established in Shanghai in 1896 under the name of Nanyang College. In 2003, the Ministry of Education approved the upgrade of this institution from college status to its current standing as a university. ＊Modern Outlook with Traditional Essence Tainan National University of The Arts adopts a modern outlook with traditional essence, with focus on the merge of everyday life with art and concept of comprehensive art campus. Accordingly, we establish four colleges—the visual arts, sound and image studies, humanities and arts, and performing arts. The Visual Arts, Sound and Image Studies, Humanities and Arts, and Performing Arts The College of Visual Arts includes the graduate institutes of Plastic Arts, Applied Arts, and Building Arts. The College of Humanities and Arts includes art history and art criticism, and museology. The graduate institute of Museology is the first and unprecedented kind in Taiwan. Despite of similar research-oriented programs offered at other institutes, Tainan National University of The Arts aims to combine professional curriculum with its practical application in the field. The courses offered in art history and art criticism will also be opened to students of other disciplines. The College of Sound and Image studies entails the arts of motion pictures and television, inclusive of the narrative, documentary, and animated pictures. There are similar programs offered in Taiwan but they are short of competitive quality to international standard. Our program aims to design a visual arts education with state-of-the art technology. The College of Performing Arts includes Department of Music, Department of Chinese Music, Department of Applied Music, Graduate Institute of Ethnomusicology, and Graduate Institute of Collaborative Piano. The two music departments, Music, and Chinese Music are unique in Taiwan in their designation of recruiting prominent junior high school graduates with art potential to receive a 7-year consecutive education that leads them to a B.A. degree in music. International Students Admission I In 1865, missionary Dr. James Laidlaw Maxwell from the British Presbyterian Church arrived in Tainan to practice medicine and do missionary work.
