I have a student who wants to learn only speaking and listening. He already has learned Chinese one year in China. I teach him with a TV drama in Mandarin. We pause for every sentence. I repeat or explain the sentence until he understands. We review the old words he learned and make more new sentences from them. I have another student who wants to learn how to input and recognize Chinese, so we practice on computer. Except the text books I also let him try to read some children’s books. Another student is older so he doesn’t have good ability to memorize. He is a beginner. I make some words cards for him to help him familiar to the characters. And we review the old lessons over and over until he remembers them. It’s not good to go through all the lessons without caring if you have forgotten what you have learned. Everyone has different need that is why a tutor is always better in learning than in a big class in some universities.
