My name is Jake and I am a certified English teacher living in Taipei. I have been teaching for many years, so have taught a wide-range of students and can mesh with personalities very easily. I have a background in business, specifically: management, marketing, & sales. I also have a military background as a Naval Officer in the USA. Improving one’s English skills can be very fun and rewarding, and I would say the three things I focus on are:
Confidence in speaking ability: I work on this by having the student do the majority of the speaking themselves; creating and building advanced sentence patterns with complex meanings. I like to layer this by including advanced vocabulary and common phrases.
Rapid listening improvement: utilizing several methods to increase ability to hear and understand English, in multiple English accents. Using inductive language learning for listening is excellent: research has proven that it is the best approach for recognizing patterns and context within languages.
Enjoyment! This is essential during our lessons and during time spent studying at home. Learning a language should be fun and enjoyable, not something that you don’t look forward to. Long-term English mastery is done by taking a relaxed, positive, and stress-free approach towards everyday immersion in the language.
