Take your ARC, your Local
License from back home, your passport
& two photos. (If your license isn't
written in English, it must be translated by a government recognized translation
company.) You will be give a WRITTEN TEST, in English, and a ROAD TEST, and
among other things they'll measure your height, weight and note down your eye
color, hair color {don't be confused if you've heard about a Physical: that's
the physical, non-invasive and it's done on-site in Taipei, if not, there is a
from to take to recognized hospitals or clinics}. The tests are quite easy. If you had the ability to drive
in your country, have no fear. Click here for a sample
online test. Passing scores for the written test: 85%, for the road test:
70%. It's not really a road test in Taipei city, it's a track-test in Taipei. A
little course they have behind their office building. In Taipei city you don't
even need to have your own vehicle: they'll rent you a scooter, NT$20 or a car,
NT$70 to test in. In Taipei city the written and road tests can be done on a
walk-in basis throughout the day. Takes about two hours total. Elsewhere, you'll
usually get the written tests in the morning, road tests in the afternoon.
Car/50cc - Tests: NT$450, Physical: NT$160, License: NT$200 = NT$810
Have Road Test anxiety? Still want a local license? If
you're willing to ride just a 50cc, you can get a local license with JUST
a written test. You still need to bring your ARC,
your Local License from
back home, your passport & two
photos.
50cc only: Test:NT$250, Physical: NT$100, License: NT$200 = NT$550
Either way, now you can LEGALLY own a scooter AND buy insurance, so consider it if you get an ARC.
If you want to ride a 100cc, a 125cc or more, you have to take
an extra test, both written and road. The same is true for locals. The basic
license in Taiwan entitles you to drive a car, truck or SUV up to 3.5 tons, but
a scooter only up to 50CCs.
Big Bike Test: NT$250, Physical NT$100 = NT$350
